In June 2006 Karen was elected President General of the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations (WUCWO)—the first woman from the United States of America to hold this position since WUCWO was founded in 1910. The World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations (WUCWO) with a membership of almost 100 organisations, active in 66 countries, represents millions of Catholic women of every walk of life.   The Pontifical Council for the Laity, in agreement with the Secretariat of State, has decreed the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations to be a public international association of the faithful according to Canon Law. The mission of WUCWO is to promote the presence, participation and co-responsibility of Catholic women in Church and society in order to enable them to fulfill their mission of evangelization and to work for human development.

Karen has been actively involved in the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) for many years on the parish, deanery, diocesan and national level.  Her international work has included meetings in Rome, Paris, London, Madrid, Australia, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Senegal, South Africa, South Korea, the Holy Land, as well as at the United Nations in New York.  Karen serves on the Governing Board of the World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP).

Karen served as a Member of the Holy See Delegation to the United Nations 55th Commission on the Status of Women in February – March 2011.

For the past twenty years, Karen has served as Pastoral Associate of Saint Margaret Mary Parish in Harrisburg, PA. In 1990 Karen received a certificate in the first Diocese of Harrisburg Lay Ministry Formation Program through Mount Saint Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, MD. Her primary responsibilities include pastoral care ministry with particular emphasis on the homebound, bereaved and those experiencing difficulties; evangelization; facilitating and working with small and large groups, parish volunteers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ministers to the sick and bereaved, social justice activities; liturgy committee; pastoral council; participation in the Penbrook-Progress Ecumenical Association. She is a member of the Diocese of Harrisburg’s Committee on Admissions and Scrutinies for the Permanent Diaconate Formation Program, as well as the Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs Committee. She serves on Pinnacle Health System’s Spiritual Care Advisory Committee.

At the request of Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI granted Karen the Pontifical Honor of Dame of the Equestrian Order of Pope Saint Sylvester for service to the Church in the Diocese of Harrisburg. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas honored Karen as Catholic Woman of the Year 2008.  WUCWO's aim is to promote the presence, participation and co-responsibility of Catholic women in society and the Church, in order to enable them to fulfil their mission of evangelisation and to work for human development.

Prayer to our Lady of Good Counsel
God of heavenly wisdom, you have given us Mary, Mother of Jesus, to be our guide and counselor. Grant that we may always seek her motherly help in this life and so enjoy her blessed presence in the life to come.

O Mother of Good Counsel, patroness of the National Council of Catholic Women, intercede for us that we may be wise, courageous, and loving leaders of the Church. Help us, dear mother, to know the mind of Jesus, your son. May the Holy Spirit fill us with reverence for God's creation, and compassion for all God's children. May our labors of love on earth enhance the reign of God and may God's gift of faith and living hope prepare us for the fullness of the world to come. AMEN

Salute to the Cross
Unto the King Eternal, Immortal, and Invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever. AMEN
